Warm season grasses are ideal for southern climates. They may do quite well with proper fertilizing and watering. Each of the following grasses are available in an increasing number of varieties.
Bermuda grass is one of the best lawn grasses among the warm season types. It is heat and drought resistant and does well at maintaining a green color in these conditions. It needs to get full sun. It does not tolerate shade. This grass spreads very quickly. It requires high rates of fertilizers in the summer months and regular watering.
Zoysia grasses are good in full sun or partial shade. They are slow in getting established and should be sodded, plugged or sprigged. They are less drought tolerant than Bermuda grass. Zoysia grasses need more care, but when properly maintained are some of the best lawns.
Fescue grass is a cool season grass primarily used in the shade. It stays green year round and with proper watering can withstand the heat of summer. Fescue grasses should be sodded or seeded as it does not spread. It needs to be over seeded every year or two to maintain its thickness. This is a high maintenance grass, but when properly maintained provides a green lawn year round.
